Yee-Peng Lantern Festival

This term we are focusing on Celebrations for Inquiry. So Room 11 has been creating many presentations about specific celebrations in the world. For this task, we had to choose a celebration from the top 10 celebrations in the world and create a mini presentation including all the research we gathered. I chose the Yee-Peng Lantern Festival and I hope you learn as much information as I did while researching! Enjoy!

Day of the Dead!

Do you know much about Day of the Dead?!

Well, if not then take a look at this presentation I created including a lot of interesting facts about Day of the Dead! I myself learnt a lot from the researching and using that research, I created a google presentation. Enjoy!

My Vehicle Transformation

In class we were assigned a task to choose a type of vehicle and add in our very own elements to the vehicle using our creativity. I chose to do a motorbike and I added a variety of built-in objects to help it look like a more new and improved motorbike. This task was influenced by a book about a lady who goes around her town wondering about all the new things she can add on her bike to make it better. Here is my created google draw with my unique motorbike.

Healthy Choices - Damn Berry

This film is about a healthy drink named Damn Berry. It was created by my group and I. We worked together to produce the script, music, shots, props and more.

In the film there is a group of girls playing netball. They work together to get their shots in. There seems to be one girl in particular that is playing outstandingly. This is because of the help from the product Damn Berry that she has consumed. The drink helps her to keep energized and active throughout the day and gives her the strength to play the sport.

I hope you enjoy the film and get the idea of keeping yourself healthy.

Maritime Museum

Today Room 11 went on a trip with Room 12 and 13 to Maritime Museum. We got to see many rare things that you wouldn't see nowadays. Maritime Museum is a museum particularly about Life On Sea. We got to see different types of boats and artwork. We even saw an old ice cream shop! When the clock hit 12, a cannon was shot. BANG! The children glared with amazement. We then went of to sea and before we knew it the harbor bridge was just above us. The wind blew hard against the boat as we sailed to shore. We then grabbed our bags on off we went back to school.

It was a day to remember!

#2MUCHSUKA

For Inquiry, we are focusing on healthy choices. This means our health, hygiene and also the food that we eat. We have been learning about the many different ways that we can keep healthy and the consequences we get if we aren't healthy.

To enjoy our learning, we decided to do a fun activity involving sugar and our creative thinking. We got into groups and estimated the amount of sugar in different drinks. We then used a teaspoon to measure our sugar and put it into zip lock bags. Using those bags we created decorative posters to hang on our Inquiry wall. Take a look at the awesome work we did in class.

Don't Sit If You Want To Keep Fit!

Do you want to keep fit? Then don't take a seat. Stand up!

For reading I read an interesting article about how standing can keep you fit. Apparently, standing makes your heart beat faster and is good for your health. It is a way of keeping fit! Interesting right! Sitting down for a long amount of time can cause pain in many parts of your body and affect your bones but yes, standing can affect the lower part of your legs. After reading the article I used all the interesting facts that I learnt and created a poster including tips. Take a look at my awesome poster and comment what you think about it!

Student Led Conference Mid Year

Today, we had our Student Led Conference for the middle of the year. The point of this event was to show my parents the progress I have made in learning so far this year and discuss with them my goals for the rest for the year. They get to see the awesome work I have completed in class and also meet my teacher. Sitting with my parents and talking about my learning was a fun experience. Here is an image of me and my parents discussing my learning in class.

Endangered Animal

For writing we are working on reports. A report gives information and facts to the reader. The article that is written is made to either persuade, inform or entertain the reader. In class Miss Tupou allocated a different endangered animal for every student. We then had to use the slide Miss Tupou sent us to answer the questions that were given. This activity was a great way to get us started for our writing sessions about report in class. Take a look at my slide.

The Dance Of Life

Have you ever heard of the Taualuga. Also known as the "Dance Of Life". Well, the taualuga is a graceful Samoan Siva that is performed at many cultural events. For Inquiry, we were given a website to choose one video that we were interested in and review that clip. Our teacher gave us several questions to answer as our Documentary Review. We then presented this review in any way that we wanted. As long as we were creative. I decided to present mine using google presentation. Here is my presentation!

Homework Accomplished!

This term I collated my homework tasks onto 1 slide. These tasks have included spelling, reading, writing and math. I enjoy completing my homework every week and seeing my name ticked off on the chart. At the end of every term, the students that have finished all of their homework get a treat! I myself, as well as other students have completed the homework tasks for this term and we get our treat on Thursday. I can't wait to see what kind of homework we get next term!

Take a look at my homework tasks for this week.

Making Playdough!

In class, we made playdough. We did this for play. Unfortunately, I was not there to make it but I did get to see how the playdough turned out and I also played with it. It was very cool even though there was a lot of mess! Here are some images!

DISCO 2018!

Last night, Glen Taylor School held its very first disco for 2018! The student leaders planned the event and the teachers helped out! Of course, DJ Vino was there to play our school jams. I myself attended the disco and it was awesome! Everyone was enjoying themselves while dancing the night away! There was food on sale and lights were beaming across the room. For our first disco of the year, it was pretty amazing!

Here are some photos of the wonderful event.

D.A.R.E!

Today was our last session with Constable T. Constable T comes into our class to talk about the choices that we make with drugs and their consequences. This programme is called D.A.R.E. During the sessions we have had with her, I have learnt many new things about the importance of not taking drugs and the consequences you receive from them.

I have gained a lot of knowledge from our sessions with Constable T.

The Secret Garden - Book Review

With Mr Victor we visited the library. At the library each of us chose a book to read and wrote a book review about the book. I decided to choose a book that I had previously read. I chose this book because I truly enjoyed reading it. I was intrigued by the blurb and front cover and the first couple of sentences were very engaging. Here is my book review about "The Secret Garden".

Have you tasted a Samoan Umu?

To celebrate Samoan Language Week, Room 11 decided to eat a Samoan Umu for lunch which was made by some students (Including myself) and we had the help of Mr Fa'alili as well. After assembly the selected students went down to Mr Fa'alili's house and prepared the umu there. I had the pleasure of seeing the process happen. We helped out with the food and when we waited for the food to cook, we played  bit of rugby, touch and volley.

When the food was ready we gathered them into boxes. The food was super hot when we unwrapped the foil from the food. We then took the food to school to enjoy with our classmates and Room 12. The food was very yum and our plates consisted of Pork, Chicken, Taro, Crabmeat Salad and Fa'i.

Here are some images of the students hard at work while making the umu.

AMY AND EZRA!

Some of our school leaders went down to Room 6 (New Entrant Class) and they did a bit of studying on the students. They learnt about them and worked in pairs to do this. Each pair created posters about the little one and we then shared our work with each other. I myself had the opportunity of meeting our new students and getting to know more about them. I was buddies with Ezra and here is the poster we created!

*One interesting fact I found out about Ezra is that she has a sister who is named AMY! Which is my name as well!

Dr Sharad Paul talks about healthy eating!

At Glen Taylor School we had a special evening where Dr Sharad Paul who came into our school to talk to us about healthy eating and why it is important! The first 100 people to give their forms back in we're the 100 people to attend the evening. Not only did we talk about healthy eating but it was also the opening for the small new building in the juniors which was promoted by Dr Sharad Paul himself. The chef or the Heritage Hotel also came in and cooked food for the attending people to enjoy!

I myself was there because as a member of the Pasifika Pearls, I performed with them. We also got to eat the amazing food which was given and I indeed enjoyed it. It is always a pleasure to be apart of the Pasifika Pearls and performing with them is very fun! Here are some photos of our performance.

Choices in the community!

For LCS, Room 11 has been focusing on Choices in the Community. We created presentations that included 3 different sources of learning. We learnt about the different bad and good choices in the community. We then researched about the one thing that we wanted to learn more about. I chose to focus on the pollution around our community. Here is my presentation!

Play Based Learning

This term the teachers have decided to do play based learning. We are aiming to do this every day. Sometimes we do it with other classes as well. Play based learning is when your class gets to play with random junk. For our first week we used things like beans, blocks, sheets, boxes, maths equipment and many other things to enjoy. It would be much better is we had different objects to play with so that we don't get bored playing with the same things. The purpose of this is to help grow a creative imagination and keep our brain flowing with different ideas.

Did you know that when we play we are still learning new things! What do you think about play based learning? Have you done it before? Would you do it?

Black Holes - The galaxies whirlpool

For reading my group worked with Miss Tupou. We read a small passage name Black Holes and we then answered questions that were provided with the texts and after doing that, we created a presentation that included 10 facts about black holes. Here is my slide.

Discovery For Kids!

A programme named Discovery For Kids came to our school to work with selected students. The programme ran for two days and I had the pleasure to be included in this event. We did a lot of fun activities and learned about many helpful things such as our comfort zone, confidence, success, being thankful for our parents/caregivers and many more. All of these activities have helped in many ways. I had much fun participating in this programme and I also got the chance to meet new people and make new friendly relationships with students from other schools!

After our second day at Discovery we had a prize giving and each participant was given a certificate! My favourite part of the programme would be our line dancing! The loud music, smiling faces and the way everyone moved in beat to the rhythm! I had a fantastic time!

Waist Measurements in Room 11

For maths we have been focusing on Statistics. Miss Tupou worked with every group in the class. She gave us this problem.

"Adidas are wanting to sponsor GTS school uniforms for winter sports (senior school only). They are interested in information about different body sizes. Brainstorm things that could be measured - height, head circumference, handspan, waist, foot length".

After brainstorming, we collected our data in our groups. Each group chose what they wanted to measure and went off to do so. My group measured Room 11's waists. After everyone collected their data they used Google Sheets to create 3 different graphs including all our findings. I chose to do a column graph while my other group members did a pie and bar graph. Here is what I collected.

Lest We Forget

Miss Wrack gave Room 11 a task to give in wonderings that we may have on to a class padlet. Using 4-5 of those wonderings, we then needed to research for answers to those wondering and create a presentation to keep all our findings on. To give it even more engagement to the readers, I added in a  voiceover in the background of my presentation using Screencastify.

I really enjoyed this task because it included finding out more information about the Anzacs and the great war. I now know how World War 1 started and many more interesting facts about the Anzacs!
Did you know that ANZAC was an acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps?
Here is my Screencastify/Presentation about the war and much more.

What is the Dawn Raids?

The Dawn Raids started in the 1970’s and ended in the early 1980’s. The police, pakeha and the pacific islanders were involved in this event. So what really happened? Well, when the white people had taken all the rich occupations - eg. doctors, nurses, lawyers and others. They needed some people to do the other jobs - eg. roadworks, janitors and factory work. So they decided to get the islanders to come and do it for them but they only had about 3 months and then they would be sent back to their home country. Some of them would hide and stay. When the police found out they would go searching for them and at the time of dawn they would break into their house and raid their property.

The pakeha were like this because they didn’t like seeing different coloured skins around them, especially on their land. Now that the dawn raids are all over, I think the white people that judged the pacific islanders would be looking back at the time of dawn raids and feeling embarrassed about the mistakes they have made and all the judging they had done about pacific people.

It was an awful time back then and I am glad it isn’t like that nowadays. Below is an image of my artwork and piece of writing about the Dawn Raids.

Life in a Trench!

In Room 11, we have been learning about World War 1 and the Anzac's. We have done many activities to do with Anzac Day and one of my personal favourites would be Room 11's life in a trench!

Miss Tupou thought it would be a great idea to have Room 11 experience the life of a soldier at war and how it was like for them to live in trench. So here is what we did! We gathered all our tables and chairs together and covered them with sheets/tarpolin. We then spent most of the day working under our tables - writing letters to our parents at home as if we were a soldier in Gallipoli. Our trenches were very comfortable but I don't think the actual soldiers trenches were as comfy as ours!

I think this was a fun challenge to do because we experienced how it was as a soldier when in a trench! Here are some images of Room 11's Life In A Trench!

Anzac Art!

In class we have been focusing on Anzac Day. We created pieces of art including our own anzac silhouettes. These silhouettes defined anything that had a relation to war. Behind our silhouettes we used pastels to create a sunrise or sunset affect. I chose to do the sunset using pink, purple and blue.

I enjoyed creating these magnificent pieces of art as it was very fun and it shows the respect for soldiers. If I could change anything about my artwork, I would change the colour choice in the background to pink, orange and yellow because it defines the sunset a bit better.

I chose this silhouette because it shows the given respect for those who have fought for New Zealand during the time of war.

What do you know about Anzac Day?

In class we created a document including things that we know and didn't know about Anzac Day. After listing those down we chose one of the things we didn't now about Anzac Day and researched to answer our question.

We then linked the 3 websites that helped us with our research and copied the text from the site that helped us to answer our findings. Take a look at my research on Anzac Day and see if you find out interesting facts about poppies that you have never heard of before!
